The culture of our firm is fundamental to who we are and what we do. Throughout this series of posts, we will delve deeper into RTM’s corporate culture through exclusive interviews with CEO Tony Mirchandani. We will explore what core values drive us, what we do that sets us apart, and how it all comes together to benefit our clients.
This post is the second installment of RTM’s commitment to being proactive in consultation.
Q: How do you identify goals and objectives for projects? How do you stay on course?
That’s actually quite challenging because each client has a different motivation. Normally when we’re kicking off a project with a client, we go through a Q&A session to determine what the drivers are of that project. Is the design being driven by high-performance building, sustainability, or cost? We determine what all the variables are and who the different individuals are that would be influencing the project. By documenting key drivers and asking questions up front to the right people, we are able to base our design on what is important from the very beginning.
During the design, we’ll always sit down with our clients and walk them through some other decisions we’re suggesting and discuss our recommendations. Through these types of presentations, we’re not only able to educate our clients, but they’re able to make an educated decision and understand what they’re getting by implementing one suggestion vs. the other.
Q: How does RTM’s proactive approach to consultation stand out?
A: When we’re hiring engineers, we’re finding that a lot of them might be good engineers, but they’ve never been taught how to be true consultants. Being a really great consultant is an art form that used to be prevalent in our industry. I think it’s fading, and we’re trying to bring that back.
We look for clients who want to hire us as consultants and partners. Sustainability and technology are being infused into the MEP world, increasing the complexity of projects and making the art of consultation more and more critical. We take that very seriously and stay on top of industry trends and the latest technology so we can proactively consult with our clients.
