You may have noticed your local Walgreens has gotten a facelift lately. That’s because the pharmacy giant headquartered in Deerfield, Ill., embarked on a campaign last year to refurbish their fleet of stores with a brighter, more modern look; a heightened focus on their pharmacy, and upgraded technology in the checkout areas.
RTM partnered with Walgreens to provide MEP design services for each remodel, and what followed was a whirlwind summer of 2014 with more than 100 completed store renovations in 30 days.
RTM Associate, Sheetal Patel, describes how they got it done. “We had a program for each type of renovation, and within that…there were probably 20-30 Walgreens in each.” Whether a location required enhancements to the pharmacy – including adding private consultation rooms in the expanded wellness clinics to align with Walgreens’ and other pharmacy chains’ post-Affordable Care Act initiative to provide more comprehensive everyday wellness care – or a beauty department that really popped, the team grouped plans into set “programs.”
Once the specific upgrades needed for each location were identified, RTM orchestrated an engineering team for each class of remodel and grouped those together on a timeline.
“We created a live GoogleDoc with all of the store numbers and each type of program,” Patel continued. The RTM project managers then worked to shuttle information and instructions between the design team and the crew on site to ensure open communication and a smooth roll-out of work.
“It was a very organized process to get these done by the deadline, and we were fortunate not to miss any of our deadlines,” says Patel.
A key cog in this process was an intrepid team of three interns who earned real-world job experience in construction project management. “With guidance and mentorship, they were able to manage the stores they were assigned from start to finish.” says Patel.
By pairing something as simple as existing Google tools with RTM’s class of capable talent, the team was able to deliver a successful completion of the project on point and on deadline while training the next generation of engineers and project managers with on-the-job, real-world experience.
