RTM was contracted to provide the MEP design of an indoor vertical farm that produces a variety of lettuce and herbs. The scope of work included engineering and design of the HVAC and associated electrical and plumbing systems serving the 30,000-square-foot process and grow areas. Included in this scope was a detailed understanding for temperature control within aeroponic and hydroponic systems and implementing the appropriate HVAC and ventilation systems to stabilize moderate changes in temperature fluctuation.
The 100,000-square-foot space was originally an empty warehouse building that was repurposed into an ideal climate for producing these foods. RTM met the client’s needs for the systems to be flexible, expandable, efficient and cost effective. The client was recognized for their concept as a winner among the 2013 Chicago Innovation Awards.
