RTM Engineering Consultants recently wrapped our last webinar of the year. The monthly broadcasts have been a huge success – our thanks to everyone who participated in each session. Our webinars have enlightened members of the architecture and commercial real estate communities on new engineering processes and best practices. This month’s session focused on current lighting controls with LED.
As lighting control is critical in buildings to maintaining proper lighting levels during normal, emergency, and egress situations, participants learned current lighting control strategies available including the benefits, costs, and applications of each. Listeners also got the opportunity to learn how lighting control is affected by emerging LED technology.
Presenter RTM Principal Mitesh Smart, PE, LEED AP, CxA covered industry developments impacting lighting controls as it relates to energy efficiency and safety.
Topics covered included:
- Types of illumination sources including incandescent, high intensity discharge (HID), fluorescent, and LED
- An overview of code requirements including the 2015 IECC for energy savings and the 2015 IBC requirements for egress and emergency lighting
- Methods of lighting control including interior lighting control, site lighting control methods, and parking garage lighting controls
- Why new technologies, such as integrated photocells with a wireless network and integrated luminaires with full lighting controls, should be considered for site and parking garage lighting
Audience Question: When does it become cost effective to install network lighting controls?
Smart: This type of control works best for buildings at or larger than 5,000 square feet. But consult with your on-site engineers for additional options.
